Camping

Camping: You either like it or you don’t. If you’re going, you might as well enjoy it…and let’s make sure our kids enjoy it! How should we prepare? You know….clothing, tents, warmth, food, activities, all of that. What’s your advice?

  1. Here are a few quick tips for camping with kids:
    • Include the kids in every aspect of camping. Let them plan and pack, and give them jobs at the campsite. This slows things down a lot, but kids really like to help and be part of things. Besides, what’s the rush? It’s vacation.
    • Pack some things that make the kids happy. Here are some ideas: books, stuffed animals for the little ones, board games, a soccer ball, a badminton set and especially … flashlights! I just got some glow stick necklaces for our first spring trip. I thought that would be fun.
    • Make fun, memorable camping food for the kids. That means Stew in a Can, Pie Iron Sandwiches, Bread on a Stick and, of course, S’Mores!
    • Plan activities your kids like. If your kids like to hike and canoe, that’s great. But some kids (like mine) would rather swim in the lake and walk to the ice cream stand. And you know how kids are; you can line up a whole week of fabulous, new experiences and what they’ll remember is the ice cream.
    Happy camping, everybody!
