Looking for tips here. My 10-month-old son, who has been a fantastic nurser for the most part, has now taken to biting. (Or, more aptly, clamping and pulling). Previously, the biting has only been when he’s been teething, and has been few and far between. Letting him gnaw on a cold washcloth/teether or giving him tylenol in the past has always worked. Neither seems to be working now, and this biting behavior has continued for nearly a week, 5 times or more a day minimum (keeping in mind that I’m away for work about 9 hours a day already…). And he has 4 teeth on top and 2 on bottom, so when he clamps down it HURTS.
I have tried the Dr. Sears/peaceful parenting tips of pulling him in towards the breast to bury his nose/pinching his nose to make him release. I have tried taking him off the breast and telling him “No, we don’t bite”, and then stopping the nursing session if it’s repeated. I have tried to make sure that we only nurse when he’s hungry or tired. I am sure it’s just a phase, and that consistency of pulling him off will eventually make him realize that if he wants to nurse, he can’t bite; but for moms who have been there, done that, how have you managed to get through the biting?
